Morgan Melanogaster reminds attendees at the GSA Fly Meeting to mask up!

We are proud to announce that we are continuing our visual arts partnership with the Genetics Society of America (GSA) at their 2022 Fly Meeting!  Morgan Melanogaster, one of our classic science communication characters, is being featured as a reminder to mask-up while attending talks and conference events.

Morgan Melanogaster is modeled after Drosophila melanogaster, colloquially known as the fruit fly.  While D. melanogaster may seem small and unassuming, the fruit fly is one of the work horses of modern genetics.  Studied for over a century because of its’ short lifespan and ease of care, fruit fly researchers have amassed a wealth of genetic and molecular tools.  This accumulation of resources and knowledge have led to fundamental discoveries in developmental biology, neuroscience, and innate immunity (to name just a few).  Research into the fruit fly has revolutionized modern medicine and shaped our understanding of biology.

The annual GSA’s Fly Meeting supports this long tradition of Drosophila research by bringing together scientists from around the world to share their research and facilitate scientific debate. We are happy and extremely honored to support their efforts in any way that we are able.
